Clay National Guard Center, Sept. 14, 2010 - An educational primer on the Georgia National Guard awaits 25 members of Cobb Youth Leadership (CYL) set to visit the Georgia National Guard’s Clay National Guard Center on Sept 22.
The program will offer these youth a full-day of briefings, tours, exhibits, and demonstrations. Major Gen. Terry Nesbitt, Georgia’s Adjutant General, will greet the group followed by a number of senior Guard officers who will acquaint the CYL members on interesting programs and unique missions of the National Guard. While not a recruiting event, the students will be able to discuss with Georgia’s top Army and Air recruiters the educational and scholarship programs available to members of the National Guard.
Visitors will tour three of Georgia’s Army Aviation units located at Clay and have the opportunity to be strapped into a UH-60 Black Hawk or OH-58 Kiowa helicopter.
CYL members will also hear from Chief Warrant Officer Ron Young, a Georgia National Guard helicopter pilot who was forced to land his Apache attack helicopter in heavy fighting in central Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Young, who was detained by the Iraqi army, mistreated and forced to appear on-camera, was later rescued south of Tikrit.
A visit to the 94th Airlift Wing of the Air Force Reserves and a tour of a C-130 will be followed by a group visit with Georgia’s 4th Civil Support Team, which is Georgia’s primary military response to threats of weapons of mass destruction. The CYL members will then have an opportunity to fly simulated air missions at the National Guard’s STARBASE schoolhouse at Dobbins. STARBASE is an educational program that provides concentrated training in math and science to classes from Cobb and Fulton County.
Cobb Youth Leadership is sponsored by Leadership Cobb Alumni Association (LCAA), under the direction of the Cobb Chamber of Commerce, and is for rising high school juniors focusing on developing leadership skills through interactive participation.
